Shadows are a favorite subject at DDP. (Just look at our past posts.) They simplify the original, removing the details and the color. But they can't exist on their own—somewhere nearby, the original exists too. The shadow proves the existence of the original.
When I found the following quote tonight, I thought it perfectly described my thoughts. And apparently this isn't the first time—a DDP search turned up five previous posts in which either Joan or I have used this same quote.
"Everything that we see is a shadow cast by that which we do not see."
