There are a lot of road improvement projects going on in Downey right now. This one, a joint project with neighboring Norwalk, involves widening the Firestone Blvd. bridge over the Rio San Gabriel Riverbed.
When the work is done (in a couple of years), you'll be able to walk or ride your bike (or wheelchair) safely over either side of the bridge without fearing all that traffic around you.
In addition, the bridge will be retrofitted to meet current earthquake safety standards, an important factor that we were all reminded of a couple of weeks ago after our recent magnitude 4.4 earthquake got our attention.
The top picture is really nice. The bridges provide some fascinating images!
